FCBC (Foundation for Children with Behavioral
Challenges) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing
education and support for caregivers. Our mission is to promote awareness of more
enlightened, compassionate, and effective approaches, such as Collaborative
Problem Solving (CPS)SM for helping
children who struggle with social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Approaches such as CPS, view challenging behavior as arising from a lack of skills. The focus of such approaches is to help caregivers identify and teach the specific lacking skills that are getting in the child's way.
FCBC began
in 1988 as a grass roots organization, P.T.E.K. (Parent
and Teachers of Explosive Kids). In March 2005, the organization
was renamed FCBC (Foundation for Children with Behavioral
Challenges), and was granted 501(c)3 non-profit status. FCBC is
overseen by a Board of Directors. Our
goals include:
- To serve as a resource for information, support and edcuation for parents, educators, and professionals involved in the care of children with social, emotional and behavioral challenges
- To advocate for adaptive and supportive environments in which these children can thrive.
- To support caregivers through the establishment of local FCBC chapters, and funding of free or reduced tuition to the annual conference for disadvantaged families.
- To promote collaboration among caregivers.
Our site draws heavily upon our personal experiences and the
work of Dr. Ross Greene, including his widely
acclaimed book, The Explosive Child (now
in it's third edition). In this book, Dr. Greene provides a new
perspective for understanding the challenges these children present
and much hope as he guides us to develop strategies – called
the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS)SM
approach - for improving our relationships with them and fostering
their development.

FCBC Update
Our Fall 2007, Fourth Annual FCBC Conference, “Beyond Discipline: From Compliance to Community” was a huge success. We filled to our capacity with over 300 attendees who enjoyed workshops on pertinent topics, networking, and learning about resources. With generous donations, we were thrilled to be able to offer scholarship assistance to more than twenty parents in need.
Be sure to check out our newly updated Support Group listings (some new groups have formed!) in the Resource Section. Thank you to all of our group leaders who give so generously of their time to help other caregivers. A very special thank you to Lenore Standish Shaw who recently steeped down after more than five years of dedicated service as the NYC Support Group Leader. We are always looking for more parent volunteers to lead groups in their local areas. If you are interested, please contact Beth Edelstein at Beth@fcbcsupport.org. It is a very rewarding experience! We are here to help you get started!
You will also find several new (very helpful) books and links added to the respective pages of the Resource section. Be sure to check those out!
