"RITALIN PATCH?"
Hi
I happened to be flipping through a magazine recently and saw an ad for a RITALIN PATCH. This could change my world!!!

I spoke with my son's psych. doc about it and he seemed a little resistent. He mentioned that what he has seen in some of the research is that many kids are having a problem with skin breakdown, and he said especially in fair skin children like mine. He suggested that I buy round band aids and put them on his skin every day for a week and if I had no problem with skin breakdown or him pulling the thing off that it might be worth a try.

Anyone with experience with this new Ritalin Patch?

Thanks
kat

Hi, kat,

my son is not on the ritalin patch, don't know anyone who is yet. I had heard the delivery of the med into the child's system might not be as reliable but I am not sure about that. .

What I do wonder, as an RN, is why there is so much concern about skin irritation if you can rotate the site of the patch daily. Nicotine patches, pain control patches... whatever, can all cause skin irritation and we always make sure to remove carefully and place the new one in a different area. This usually avoids skin probs even for long term patch users. Just my 2 cents! Good luck!

Hi and thanks for your response,
I had wondered the same thing myself. Anyway, I haven't noticed much of a problem with his skin wearing the band aids. I did do a little more research and read that if they have a skin reaction to the Daytrana (ritalin patch), that there is a strong likeliehood that they would have an adverse reaction to ALL FORMS of ritalin afterwards.
This patch also says to administer it 2 HOURS BEFORE EFFECTS ARE NEEDED. What do I do, wake up a 4-5 am and slap a patch on?
This is a tough one, I'll have to really look into. Can I take the risk that he'll be unable to take any ritalin ever? It would definitely change our world if it works for him...I can't imagine getting through the first hour of the day with my cooperative son who usually appears later. If anyone knows of any other online support groups for adhd and such, let me know so I can check those boards too.
Thank you
Kat

HI
If anyone else needs more info I found a message board with a thread discussing the patch.

www.adhdnews.com

There is a message board for medications and the link discussing the patch is there (Daytrana).

Hello! I have never posted on this site before. Just wanted to say my daughter begins on the patch tomorrow. She was recently diagnosed and I have struggled with the idea of medication in general. But it was a blessing that the patch is avaliable as she is a terror to get to swallow pills. She was on Strattera for 4 months and it was HORRIBLE!! Her DR. told us he has had great results with the patch. I am hopeful. I will be happy to let you know about the skin irritation issue. This has not occured in any patients on the patch in our daughter's DR's pratice. My daughter, however, is not fair complected so that may be to her advantage. I will be happy to return in a week or so with an update!

God Bless, jennifer

Hi,
check the blog of Dr Kenny Handelman
He has something on the patch , ask a question

He did something on parenting and ADHD, and we had quite an interesting discussion.
